Cowboys 33-20 Win New York Giants

The Dallas Cowboys defeated the New York Giants 33-20 in Jason Garrett’s debut as coach, ending their five-game losing streak and the Giants’ run of five straight wins.

Jon Kitna threw three touchdown passes and Bryan McCann scored on a 101-yard interception return for the Cowboys, who were 14-point underdogs entering the game at New Meadowlands Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

“The guys accepted the challenge of where we were,” Garrett said in a televised interview. “They practiced really well this week and carried it over to the game.”

Dallas’s first win since Sept. 26 came six days after coach Wade Phillips was fired following a 1-7 start to the National Football League season. Under Garrett, who was promoted from offensive coordinator, the Cowboys built a 26-6 lead and held the Giants without a touchdown until midway through the third quarter.

The New York Jets beat the Cleveland Browns 26-20 in overtime earlier today as Santonio Holmes broke loose for a 37- yard touchdown catch with 16 seconds left. It was the second straight overtime win for the Jets, whose 7-2 record is tied for the best in the NFL.

The Jets have a half-game lead in the American Football Conference’s East Division over the New England Patriots (6-2), who visit the Pittsburgh Steelers (6-2) tonight.

Cowboys Win

At New Meadowlands Stadium, Kitna had 327 passing yards for the Cowboys and threw touchdown passes to Dez Bryant, Felix Jones and Miles Austin.

Dallas’s defense forced three turnovers, including McCann’s second quarter interception that he took the length of the field for a 16-3 Cowboys lead.

The Giants got their first touchdown with 9:01 left in the third quarter on a five-yard pass from Eli Manning to Mario Manningham.

The score came after the game was halted because of a second power outage that left the new .6 billion stadium in almost complete darkness. Stadium officials are investigating the cause of the outages, the Giants said in a statement.

The Cowboys, who three weeks ago lost at home to the Giants 41-35, were the third NFL team this season to enter a game as two-touchdown underdogs at Las Vegas sports books. They’re the only one to win.

The Giants fall to 6-3 and hold a half-game lead in the National Football Conference’s East Division over the Philadelphia Eagles (5-3), who visit Washington tomorrow.

Jets Win in Overtime

In Cleveland, Holmes caught a pass from quarterback Mark Sanchez on the first play of the Jets’ fourth overtime possession and slipped through three Browns defenders for the winning score. The Browns’ defensive coordinator is Rob Ryan, the twin brother of Jets coach Rex Ryan.

Holmes’s touchdown was the third-latest since overtime began in 1974 and helped the Jets avoid their first tie since 1988. The Jets beat Detroit 23-20 in overtime last week.

The Browns dropped to 3-6 after beating the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints (6-3) and Patriots the previous two weeks. Cleveland rookie Colt McCoy forced overtime by completing a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Massaquoi with 48 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The Browns had two turnovers, including Chansi Stuckey’s fumble at the Jets’ 36-yard line in overtime.

Nick Folk missed three field goals for New York, including a 47-yard attempt in overtime, before Holmes pulled out the win with his first touchdown of the season. It was the Jets’ eighth straight regular-season road win.

Bills Get First Win

The Buffalo Bills are no longer the NFL’s lone winless team after beating the Detroit Lions 14-12 at Ralph Wilson Stadium in Buffalo. Fred Jackson scored two touchdowns and the Bills (1-8) held on for the win when Detroit (2-7) failed on a two-point conversion attempt with 19 seconds remaining.

The Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Houston Texans 31-24 when Mike Thomas caught a 50-yard touchdown pass on the game’s final play. Texans defensive back Glover Quin batted the desperation throw by Jaguars quarterback David Garrard right into the hands of Thomas, who caught it at the 1-yard line at then stepped into the end zone.

Jacksonville improved to 5-4 and Houston lost its third straight game to drop to 4-5.

The Indianapolis Colts improved to 6-3 by forcing five turnovers in a 23-17 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, while the Chicago Bears intercepted Brett Favre three times to beat the Minnesota Vikings 27-13.

Elsewhere in Week 10 it was Tampa Bay 31, Carolina 16; Miami 29, Tennessee 17; Denver 49, Kansas City 29; San Francisco 23, St. Louis 20 in overtime; and Seattle 36, Arizona 18. Atlanta beat Baltimore 26-21 on Nov. 11.

Philadelphia edging New York Giants.  The Eagles 4th quarter comeback was unbelievable.  It was spectacular.  It was lightening fast.  It was the Philadelphia Eagles at their best.  It was combination of old school Michael Vic combined with the new school, more mature Michael Vic.   It was  DeSean Jackson overcoming a crucial fumble then having a walk off punt run that was pretty much over after he dribbled the ball twice on the field turf the in the new Meadowlands.  It was a defense that came up big when it was needed the most by getting key stops.   Michael Vic ignited the comeback with a difficult pass to Brent Celek between two defenders and terrific run after catch by Celek.  One of the most momentum changing plays was David Akers onside kick after the Celek touchdown.   Akers kick took a perfect high hop which the Eagles easily recovered, and sent panic in not only the Giants but of the entire stadium.  Then Michael Vic took over with his legs turning potential sacks into long soul breaking runs, which took the air out of the Giants.  There was no doubt in anyone’s mind that after the Eagles closed to within seven at 31-24, that if the Eagles got the ball back without the Giants scoring that this game was going to be tied.  Sure enough the Eagles defense came through and Vic got the ball back.  Vic quickly led the Eagles downfield with another back breaking run getting the Eagles close.  His pass to Jeremy Macklin got them even.  That left plenty of time for the Giants with a chance to go ahead especially with all three of their time outs.  But the Eagles defense stepped up sacking Manning and forcing a punt.  The rest is DeSean Jackson history, not bad for man who has sprained foot.  This win has all but wrapped up the division and given the Eagles a good chance to get a first round bye.  Not to mention a put fear into playoff opponents that they are never out of any game.

This was a crushing defeat for the Giants.  This defeat will be difficult to overcome.  For 3 ½ quarts they controlled and frustrated the most explosive team in the league and held them to 10 points, and had a 21 point lead.  Within a half hour they went from taking the lead in the division and getting the inside track for a bye, to one of the most devastating defeats in team history.  Now they will have to win out just to qualify as a wild card team which will not be easy especially after this defeat.  This was not a total choke job as many have suggested, but the Giants did have a couple of brain farts at the worst times.  The most obvious was Matt Dodge kicking the ball to DeSean Jackson instead of out of bounds like Tom Coughlin told him too.   The explanation that he panicked because of the high snap is not acceptable.  Many people are wondering what his wonderlic score was because he should have known to kick the ball out of bounds even if he shanks it 10 yards.   The other key play was the onside kick by Akers.  The Eagles had just scored to pull within 14 points and the Giants should have had their onside kick team in.  Instead they had their regular kick return in who bailing out as Akers approached the ball. A special teams blunder of the worst kind.  Even with these mistakes, the Giants offense must take blame also.  When the Eagles scored they failed to move the ball and score again.  They had done pretty much whatever they wanted their entire game.  Eli Manning was having his best game in a couple of months.  Then were shut down when it counted most.  I’m not saying the Giants are done, but they are going to need many years of group sessions with Dr. Phil to get over this loss.

New England edging Green Bay.  Patriots reserve offensive lineman /goal line fullback Dan Connelly’s

71 yard kickoff return ignited the comeback.  Tom Brady 4th quarter touchdown pass put the Patriots ahead, and the defense held on the late charge by the Packers to all but wrap up home field advantage for the Patriots.  The play of the game for the Patriots was Connelly’s return.  He showed patient as he slowly sprinted through the first line of the Packers defense, showed good open field running ability, shifted the ball into his left hand and also a mean stiff arm to get yards after contact as he approached the goal line.  Connelly has earned the right to get more touches.   The Patriots were fortunate to win this game.  They were man handled for the first time since the Cleveland game.  Brady was sacked and hit after throws.  He appeared out of sorts.  He may even have bruises which is rare.  The Patriots did what they often do.  They win when they don’t play their best.  They were far from their best.

Green Bay almost won a game no one thought they had a chance to keep close.  They ran the ball effectively for the first time since Ryan Grant was hurt.  They controlled the clock keeping the ball out of Tom Brady’s hands.  Mike Flynn played under control and converted often on third down situations.  His one mistake was his third quarter interception that was returned for a touchdown.  But for the most part he played error free football.  The Packer defense stopped the Patriots running game, hit Brady in the mouth.  They just couldn’t get any turnovers.  A valiant effort for the Packers but they came up short.  They still have a chance to the division or make it as wild card, but there is no margin for error left.

Indianapolis over Jacksonville.  The Colts did what they haven’t done all year.  They ran the ball and stopped the run.  The return of the onside kick salted the game away.  The Jaguars missed on a golden opportunity to win the division and put an end the Colts reign.  They didn’t get it done because they didn’t do what they do best and that is run the football.  Now the Colts have control of the division and the Jaguars need help and lots of it.  A wild card berth is unlikely.

Baltimore over New Orleans.  The Ravens won a game they desperately needed to almost clinch a playoff spot.  They did it the Raven way.  They ran the ball with Ray Rice and shut down the Saints running attack making the Saints one dimensional, which allowed them to sack and harass Drew Brees all day long.  The Saints needed this game to keep pace with the Falcons but they couldn’t stop the run on defense.  Now they must win out so they can have the first wild card spot and play the NFC least winner in the first round.

Kansas City over St. Louis.  Matt Casel played well considering he just had an appendectomy 11 days ago.  But it was the Chiefs running game that won this game and kept them a game ahead in their division.  The Rams showed grit but may a year or two away from becoming a real contender.  They still have designs on winning the division even if they are 7-9 to do it.

Dallas edging Washington.  Jon Kitna is playing well enough to earn the right to compete for the starting job next year.  Jason Garrett is now 4-2 as head coach with two close losses.  Now evoking conspiracy theorists that he scaled down the offense so that he could get former coach Wade Phillips fired.  Maybe Redskin coach Mike Shanahan was right benching McNabb for Rex Grossman.  Or maybe it was because the Cowboys defense is just plain awful.  I’m going with the awful defense.

Carolina over Arizona.  Did anybody watch this game besides family members and fans with no lives? Both teams are looking forward to drafting Stanford’s Andrew Luck with the first pick in the draft.

Cincinnati over Cleveland.  In the battle of Ohio the big news in this game is that TO got hurt and is out for the season for the first time in his 17 year career.  Does this mean no more twitter for TO?  Thank goodness it was only his knee and not his fingers.

Buffalo over Miami.  The Bills have the best field goal defense in the league.  The Dolphins continue to make the push for 8-8 by losing every other game.  Next week the play Detroit.  Dolphins are looking like a lock.

Atlanta over Seattle.  The Falcons continue to their push towards getting home field advantage with an easy road win.  The Seahawks are now having issues at home now too.   Pete Carroll is hoping another win clinches a berth in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Oakland over Denver.  The Raiders ruin Tim Tebow’s starting debut by rolling Denver again.  Tebow well for a rookie but without a defense, he needed to play like to like John Elway keep it close.

New York Jets edging Pittsburgh.  The Jets a won a tough game by running the ball and playing bend but don’t break defense.   There were also “no code reds” ordered so no sideline incidents.  The Steelers came up a little short at the end, but not having Troy Polamalu or his hair hurt them on defense.

San Diego blasting San Francisco.  The Chargers and Phillip Rivers took out a big piece of wood and whacked the 49ers from the whistle.  The 49ers celebrated because they are in excellent position to win the NFC least.

(Editor’s Note: This is Part 2 of a story about the life of a college football team’s season in only two games—one was an abject heartache, and the other an extreme joy. The team was the University of Washington this season, and the events that unfolded brought to mind Charles Dickens’ novel “A Tale of Two Cities”. Here is what really happened, and when.)

As disheartening as Washington’s loss was to Notre Dame, what was about to happen was more than the Huskies could ever have expected or imagined. It will live forever in the annuals of Washington Husky football lore.

With their season record now at 2-3, Washington’s Huskies would return to their home turf and await the arrival of the Arizona Wildcat’s glossy 3-1 record with victories over Central Michigan and Northern Arizona at home and over Oregon State on-the-road. Their only loss was by 10 points to the 12th-rated Iowa Hawkeyes in another away game.

Arizona coach Mike Stoops (brother of coach Bob Stoops of the Oklahoma Sooners) had compiled an 8-5 mark last year capped by a victory over Brigham Young in the Las Vegas Bowl. The Wildcats were finally getting some national notice, and not anxious to take a step backwards.

Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian had quarterbacked for Brigham Young in 1995, leading the Cougars to a 13-1 regular season mark, beating Kansas State 19-15 in the Cotton Bowl, and becoming the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year. His BYU team became the first in NCAA history to win 14 games in a season. Sarkisian’s 162.0 career passing efficiency rating is 3rd all-time in the NCAA.

“Sark” needed to convince his players to keep playing hard and believing that Notre Dame was just a blip on the screen in their forward march to success.

At game time, the Huskies appeared willing but not always able. Arizona moved the ball at will, piling up 461 yards of offense and successfully throwing enough “bubble” passes to start a bubblegum manufacturing company.

Wildcat quarterback Nick Foles made a career out of taking the ball under center, stepping back and sending rockets to the wideouts at the line of scrimmage. The Arizona receivers responded by churning for short yardage before the defenders could come up and tackle, stopping a long gain.

Arizona had exposed a Husky weakness and was exploiting it like a trader with an insider stock tip. Washington simply does not have the talent right now to play receivers one-on-one, so they must play off the line of scrimmage to avoid getting beat deep and giving up a long-yardage play.

Foles would go 39-of-53 for 384 yards and a touchdown before the night was over, leaving Arizona with a grand total of only 77yards rushing on 30 carries.

The Wildcats had built a 33-21 lead with less than 3 minutes to play and it looked like Washington was floating dead in the water. But, then again, this was not last year’s 0-12 Husky team.

Washington’s offensive 11 was still playing hard and believing when a scrambling Jake Locker found tight end Kavario Middleton in the corner of the end zone for a 25-yard TD strike to bring the Huskies to within 5 at 33-28 with 2:55 left.

Sark then did what many coaches would not do, he elected to kick off to the Wildcats rather than go for an onside kick and possible immediate possession of the ball. That is called belief in your defensive coordinator—Nick “The Wild Man” Holt—and his bend but don’t break diehards.

All night the Huskies had been beaten again and again and again on the quick wideout bubble pass. You could hardly blame the Arizona coaching staff for not calling the play again; conventional wisdom says you call a play that is working until the defense can stop you.

So once again Nick Foles rifled a pass to wideout Delashaun Dean but Foles’ pass was low and behind the receiver, who fell to the turf trying to catch the pigskin. Linebacker Mason Foster had overrun the play on the defensive side on purpose, and words are a very poor substitute for what happened next.

Foster’s aggressiveness had pushed Foles to the limit and his pass bounced off of the receiver’s foot and up into the air where Foster juggled it momentarily, and then turned around and ran untouched for a 37-yard interception and return touchdown, putting the Huskies up 34-33 with 2:37 left to play.

The Washington faithful, who had come to life when the Huskies scored earlier in the game, now went berserk with frenzied excitement. And the players? Well, let’s just say the reaction was extreme joy. And the coaches? Perhaps frenzied, joyful and over the top unstoppable in their belief that the Huskies can and will win by playing hard, playing right and having fun.

There were no priests noticeable at that moment, and the mythical “touchdown Jesus” picture visible from Notre Dame Stadium had not been transported from Notre Dame to Husky Stadium for the game, but before our very eyes, a miracle of the football gods had happened. They had had enough of Arizona’s bubble passes and it was time for redemption.

Call it luck, call it the bounce of the ball, or call it what I do—”The Immaculate Footception”, a little clumsy in expression but quite accurate. Whatever you call it, it will forever remain in Washington football history in the years to come. Should the Huskies go on to qualify and win a bowl game this year, the happy happening and Mason Foster will be cemented in legend.

Sark went for the 2-point conversion and Jake Locker hooked up with sophomore wide receiver (and budding star) Jermaine Kearse to make it happen, putting Washington up 36-33.

Mason Foster had an awesome night with 11 tackles, a pair of key stops on Arizona’s last drive, and an interception and moment of glory that will take at least a lifetime to forget and take a million years to duplicate exactly.

Washington’s miracle play brought back great memories of “The Immaculate Reception” during a 1972 playoff game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and Oakland Raiders. Late in the game a Pittsburgh receiver was hit hard as he tried to make a catch, the ball was deflected and just before it hit the ground, it was caught by Franco Harris, who picked it out of the air and then ran it in for the touchdown that won the game for the Steelers.

Pittsburgh had struggled for 4 decades to win a playoff game, and The Immaculate Reception—called by NFL films as the greatest play of all time—led to the Steelers eventually winning 4 Super Bowls before the end of the decade.

The frosting on the cake came when Arizona had one last chance to pull out the victory that should have been theirs.

The Husky defensive line, which had not done a whole lot all night, came to life as its best pass rusher, Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, got in touch with his Samoan roots and sacked Nick Foles on a critical play. On the next play, true freshman cornerback (and future NFL player) Desmond Trufant intercepted a Foles pass with 36 seconds left to seal the Dawgs’ improbable 36-33 win.

Trust me when I say that University of Washington football and Husky madness is on the rise. Look for a lot of lost Dawgs to make their way back to Husky Stadium in the next few home games.

Husky fans in the great Pacific Northwest are not drinking the Kool-Aid as the expression goes, they are enjoying the sweet taste of success. Even the football gods are so pleased that they have decided to order cable hook-up with high-def.

Super Bowl Props

Almost as big as the game itself, prop wagers have become synonymous with the Super Bowl and everything that goes with the big game.

The popularity has grown in direct proportion with the oddsmaker’s creativity. What was once an afterthought, or an obligatory task has now become an art form for sports books, as they create hundreds and hundreds of proposition betting options for their clients.

If you’re old enough, you’ll likely remember when the prop bet took that big step into the spotlight: It was Super Bowl XX in 1986, featuring the brash Chicago Bears and the sacrificial lamb New England Patriots.

The Bears had personality to burn with compelling storylines on both sides of the ball. One of the biggest stories of the year was William “The Refrigerator” Perry, the D-end who also scored a few TDs on offense.

He grabbed the attention of even the most casual fan and much of the focus of this attention building up to the game was whether or not he’d score a TD. Caesars Palace in Las Vegas jumped on this and put up a “Will William “The Refrigerator” Perry score a touchdown” prop. It received a massive amount of attention (Perry did in fact score a TD, and Walter Payton fans will always wince when they think about that) and the prop wager said “Hello world”…and it has gone on from there.

The Super Bowl prop wager is now a part of pop culture, with everyone from school teachers to grandmothers to nuns enjoying “watercooler” conversations about prop offerings. They’re impossible to avoid this time of the year with the mainstream media loving the topic and delivering story after story focused on them.

I remember a few years back, one of the more popular prop bets that grabbed a ton of media attention was related to Billy Joel’s version of the national anthem.

Online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com posted up the prop “How Long Will It Take Billy Joel To Sing The National Anthem?”

The over/under was set at 1:44. Bettors all over started singing the anthem and timing themselves as well as hitting Youtube searching for footage of previous Billy Joel anthems (and at least one version was posted).

Billy Joel sang the anthem at the 2000 World Series. The hit count for that video started to rack up as the Bill Joel prop was talked about on TV and radio across North America, as well as spread across the web and print media.

The Youtube version clocked in at 1 minute and 37 seconds.

When Billy wrapped up his song on Super Bowl Sunday “Under” 1:44 bettors smiled, as they pocketed a winning bet before the game had even kicked off.

This year’s Super Bowl is no different. The surprising Arizona Cardinals make their way to Tampa to face a tough Steeler team.

Checking the prop wagering options at some of the online sports books we see SPORTSBETTING.com has a full lineup of them, ranging from the obvious (who will score first, who will be the MVP) to the more exotic (who will have more points on Sunday, the Steelers or Cleveland’s Lebron James)…there are literally hundreds of prop options. It’s entertaining just surfing through and reading what’s available.

A very common proposition amongst various books is the coin toss bet.

In line with the coin toss bet is the “Team to win the coin toss” prop. The Steelers are listed at -105 to win the coin toss and the Cardinals are listed at the same.

Another coin toss-related prop is the “Team to receive the opening kick off” bet; Pittsburgh is at even money and Arizona is -130.

There are also props related to the actual game as well, including which team will score first. Will it be the Steelers who are -150 or will it be the Cardinals at +120?

Kurt Warner is one of the reasons that Arizona earned its first berth to a Super Bowl; the Cards’ QB threw for 4,583 yards and 30 TDs during the regular season and another 770 yards and 8 TDs this postseason.

Obviously Warner is the topic of a number of props.

Books have the Over/Under for Warner’s total passing yards set at 255.5 yards.

Will Warner’s longest completion be Over (-115) or Under (-115) 39.5 yards?

If Arizona’s QB does manage to complete a pass that is longer than 40 yards, chances are it will be to WR Larry Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald has been the best receiver during postseason, leading the league in receiving yards with 419 and with 23 receptions.

The Over/Under for Fitzgerald’s Total receiving yards in the Super Bowl is set at 95.5.

While Pittsburgh does have some good players on the offensive side of the ball, its strength has been its defense.

Strong safety Troy Polamalu, a key cog in the Steelers’ secondary, intercepted a pass late in the fourth quarter of the AFC title game and returned it for a TD.

If Polamalu picks off a pass in the Super Bowl, it will pay out at +170, it he doesn’t it will pay out at -220.

For over twenty years I have been betting on sports. My first sports bets were the cards left at the bowling alley by a local bookmaker. I noticed him drop off the cards and asked the owner, who I knew pretty well, what the cards were. So he told me and patiently explained all the odds. It was like a part of my brain had been turned on. From that point I have always known and understood the odds on the bets others and I were making.

This article will just go over the basics, which everyone should know if they plan on making a bet on Football or Basketball. It amazes me how many people are not aware of what the payoffs are on a bet they are planning to make, or even after the bet has been made. It is a fast way to get cheated out of money owed to you. I have had recent college graduates from major universities make bets with me during college basketball and ask me how much their bet pays, and when I tell them it pays two to one, they still ask me how much they will win if they bet a hundred bucks. This worries me about the future leaders of our country. Two to one is pretty basic math.

The odds are almost always posted on a big board in each sports book, there are usually typed up sheets available for each sport printed up daily with the lines. The home team is always on the bottom and the times are where you are unless specifically stated. In Las Vegas it would be Pacific Time. There will also be a number associated with each team. It is always appropriate to say the number of the team you are betting on, not the team name when making a wager.

A point spread transaction would be listed like:

567 Steelers –7

568 Bengals +7

When using a point spread the team with the minus is the favorite. You can bet on the Steelers to win by more than seven points or the Bengals not to lose by more than seven points. If the Steelers win by, and the Bengals lose by exactly seven points it is called a “push” and the entire amount of money you wagered will be returned to you. This point spread bet requires a bet of to win and a return. This is known as a flat bet.

Example:

567 Steelers –7     Bet 0 to win 0 equals 0 back

568 Bengals +7     Bet 0 to win 0 equals 0 back

You will also see a total number you can bet on. Lets say the total number is 42, this means you can bet on the combined total scores of both teams to be over 42, or under 42 for the final score of the game. This bet also is a flat bet of to with a return. If the final score of the game adds up to exactly 42 this is also a push, and your money will be returned to you.

Example:

567 Steelers 42     Over – Bet 0 to win 0 equals 0 back

568 Bengals          Under – Bet 0 to win 0 equals 0 back

Now lets look at a money line wager. For instance if the line for the Steelers said –220 and the line for the Bengals said +200, money lines are always listed by hundreds meaning the minus is what you have to bet to win one hundred dollars, and the plus is what you win by betting one hundred dollars. When playing the money line your team simply has to win the game, it does not matter by how many points.

Example:

567 Steelers –220     Bet 0 to win 0 equals 0 back

568 Bengals +200     Bet 0 to win 0 equals 0 back

Always remember to check the lines and understand the returns on the amount of money you wager on any sport. All of the above examples relate to football and basketball at the professional and college level.

Let’s talk about the super bowl halftime show for a second. We just got confirmation from trusted sources and confirmed that The Black Eyed Peas will perform a full out concert in front of millions. They are set to perform in the Bridgestone Super Bowl XLV Halftime Show on FOX at Cowboys Stadium in Northern Texas on Sunday, Feb, 6. Fox had this to say about the event: “The Bridgestone Super Bowl Halftime Show is the most-watched musical event of the year. More than 153 million viewers in the U.S. watched last year’s show. The Super Bowl and halftime show will be broadcast worldwide.”

First of all, I won’t claim to be one of Mike Culotta’s best friends when I wasn’t.  I barely knew him…. other than the fact that he was a voice that I practically grew up with on the radio.  He was only a few years older than me, but it seems like his voice has been a part of my life since childhood.

As a DJ for 92.3, and later 97.1 on the FM dial, it’s hard to remember a time when I wasn’t hearing him talk to me between the great classic rock tunes.  Sometimes I would call into the station to request a song, but like many people, I was really only calling to make a connection with the voice I was hearing on the radio.  It was usually a very brief encounter, in which I would nervously choke out the name of the song I want to hear… usually a Led Zeppelin tune… and hear a click after a quick “okay, thanks for calling….”

One time I had the experience of hearing Mike actually say my name on the radio… “here’s a request for Stairway to Heaven going out to Lee…”  Hearing my name on the radio was one of the coolest things in the world.

Once I began to hang out at the local clubs, which was a little before I should have (I’d get in by carrying one of Mike Cromer’s guitars as a roadie for my favorite local band, Little Sister), I would often see Culotta  hanging around with the prominent local musicians of the time at clubs like the Moby Grape, Main Gate, Kracker’s, Club Rock, and several others.

Of course, with my shyness, I never had the nerve to approach people like him… or Freddie Woods, Lark Williams, Big Marty, or the other DJ’s of the time.  They were as much rock stars as the real rock stars.  Sometimes I would find myself crossing paths with them, and in the course of trying to appear cool and composed, I would say something really stupid like a star-struck teenager and walk away feeling like I made a fool of myself.  But then, even Mike Cromer, Rachel, Dave, and the rest of the band had that effect on me (as much as people respect me for my playing, I am very open about the fact that Cromer was one of my biggest influences on the guitar during that very impressionable period of my life).

Over the years, I developed a familiarity with Mike Culotta, and he became a bit familiar with me under my stage name of Raven Storm.  I would often see him around town, and became much more comfortable approaching and talking to him as time went on, and I found him to be a very cool guy with an incredibly endearing personality.  I found that he was always engaging in a conversation, especially if you bring up the Pittsburgh Steelers.  Even though I am a Rams fan, I once had a wonderful conversation with him about how his team beat mine in the Super Bowl of 1979, and the irony of the movie, Heaven Can Wait, which came out the year before and featured a story line about the Rams meeting the Steelers in the Super Bowl, but with a different outcome. Technically, the Steelers were my second favorite team, since my Dad was Seneca Indian from Oil City, Pennsyvania, north of Pittsburgh.   For a moment, we were just two guys talking football, and he was so cool and personable that I forgot that he was the voice I had been listening to on the radio for most of my life.

In October of 2009, I was performing with Fallen Grace at Bailey’s Sports Bar in Las Vegas, and my bandmate and close friend, Davyo, told me that Mike was supposed to be showing up.  DavyO, being a legitimate local celebrity in his own right, and a great musician as well… enough to intimidate the hell out of me when I began playing with him in Tarah’s band… had been very close friends with Mike for many years.   I was pleasantly surprised that Mike recognized me and ended up sitting directly in front of me for the show… which made me incredibly nervous.  The last time he had seen me play was 20 years earlier when Little Sister allowed me on stage to play Led Zeppelin’s “Rock and Roll,” and I turned it into a ridiculous arpeggio-fest in my adolescent need to impress.  Of course, it was hearing a recording of that performance afterward that made me realize what the phrase “too many notes” really meant (in the words of actor, Jerry Jones, in the movie Amadeus).  Needless to say, I changed my approach to playing guitar that very night, with Cromer’s incredibly tasty and melodic style that I admired so much, as an example of the direction I should go.

It was my first show with Fallen Grace that night last year… Laurie Swain’s birthday party, as a matter of fact… and I was more concerned with playing the songs correctly and kept the solos quite basic… mostly improvised as I hadn’t had the time to work many of them out. Culotta honored me with some incredibly meaningful praise, especially considering who he was and his experience being around great musicians, and later backed it up with a personal message on Facebook that I’ll never forget, as well as a post on his own page regarding his opinion of the show (which can still be seen with a search back to October, 2009).  I looked at that night as the possible beginning of a new friendship with him.  The star-struck kid who eventually befriends a person he admires.

I never got to express the feeling I had of him mentioning my name on the radio so many years earlier, or even the Little Sister jam at the Grape.  I doubt he would even remember… but I feel very fortunate to have had that time of hanging out with he and DavyO, hearing some of the stories between them,  my brief moment of impressing him, and the kind words he had for me afterward.  He never made it to another Fallen Grace show, although I personally invited him to several of them.

I hate that my shyness prevented me from possibly becoming friends with him earlier.  It’s a curse I’ve had my entire life.  Even DavyO, whom I have seen around town forever, I never really got to know until joining Fallen Grace, and I feel very fortunate to call him one of my closest friends now, along with Tarah and Danny.  I know that trait of shyness has sometimes been mistaken for other things… things that may make people hesitant to approach me.  There are many faces I’ve seen around Vegas over the years I have yet to meet and get to know. Some of them may be reading this, and  I hope those people realize it’s not a matter of being aloof or arrogant…just shy, and a bit unable to get over that hump of the initial, “hey…. I’m Raven.  Nice to meet you…”

It doesn’t help that I have a terrible memory.  I remember faces, but I rarely remember where I know people from.  So many years of so many gigs, it’s very hard for me.  Even when working at Sam Ash, I would often see familiar faces, but not knowing where they’re from would make me feel foolish in approaching them.  When I’m recognized, I do my best to remember, but rarely make the connection unless someone brings up the event or something to trigger the memory.

Mike Culotta is an example of a friendship I missed out on, and now it’s too late.  To anyone who sees me around Vegas next time I’m in town… at Feelgood’s, Tommy Rocker’s, or anywhere else… please don’t hesitate to say hi.  If I’ve met you before, but I seem to not be sure, please help me out my reminding me, and please don’t be offended if I don’t remember right away.  It’s pretty hard to dig memories out of this black hole I call a brain…

Someday, somewhere… a child will be born, and he will have the gifts of a great voice and the ability to touch thousands of people with it.  He’ll know music…. great music.  He will have a great vibe about him, and a warm spirit, and people will be drawn to him… great people…. and a few nuts like DavyO. He’ll have a strange passion for the Pittsburgh Steelers, even if he’s from Australia.  He’ll probably feel a strange connection to a place called Las Vegas.

Wherever that child is, the people he meets and attaches himself to will be very lucky, just as we were. Have a good rest, Mike… and I hope to be one of those lucky people in the next life.
